Cure Autism

Autism is a mental condition which is present in an individual from early childhood. This is characterized by the individual’s difficulty in communicating and establishing relationships with other people. It is also observed as the individual’s difficulty to use language and abstract concepts. There is great need to increase the awareness of autism among public.

In May 2013 all the autism disorders were merged into one umbrella of diagnosis called Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Formerly, they were acknowledged as distinct subtypes that encompassed Autistic disorder, Childhood disintegrative disorder, Pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome.

What are its symptoms?

Autism or Autism spectrum disorder is a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by:

  • Difficulties in social interaction.
  • Difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Repetitive behaviours.
  • Having trouble in learning the meaning of words.
  • Facing trouble in adjusting to changes like trying new foods, having a substitute teacher or having toys moved from their usual places, etc.
  • Difficulties in motor coordination.
  • Attention disorder.
  • Other physical health concerns like sleep and gastrointestinal disorders.

However, it must be noted that certain individuals with ASD excel in Visual skills, Music, Mathematics and Arts.

Autism seems to have its roots from very early brain development. However, the most noticeable signs of autism tend to appear between 2 to 3 years of age. The following acts as a warning sign which shows that your child is at risk:

6 months or later

Lack of a big smiles or other warm and joyful expression.

9 months

Absence of back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions.

12 months

  • Lack of response to name.
  • No babbling.
  • Lack of back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving.

16 months

No words.

24 months

Absence of meaningful, two-word phrases which does not include imitating or repeating.

At any age

Any loss of speech, babbling or social skills.

Do the symptoms change overtime?

For several individuals, the symptoms may improve with age and behavioural treatments but, others might need services and support as they grow up. Subject to severity of the disorder, individuals with ASD may be able to work successfully and live independently or within a supportive environment.

What causes ASD?

Understanding the cause is very important because in the last decade, autism cases have risen drastically. Both genetics and environmental factors have a role to play here.

  • 20% of children with ASD also have certain genetic conditions. Those conditions include Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome and tuberous sclerosis among others.
  • Research suggests that ASD could be a result of disruptions in normal brain growth very early in development.
  • Most cases involve a complex and variable combination of genetic risk and environmental factors that influence early brain development
  • Autism is more common among children born prematurely.
  • Severe infections that affect the brain like meningitis, celiac disease, encephalitis, etc.
  • Exposure to toxins or illness during pregnancy like rubella, chemicals, etc.
  • Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than girls.
  • Having a sibling with ASD.
  • Advanced parental age at time of conception (a mother who was 35 or older, and / or a father who was 40 or older when the baby was born).

A fast growing body of study suggests that autism risk is less among children whose mothers took prenatal vitamins containing folic acid in the months before and after conception.
